More Info About Girls on the Run In Kansas City

Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in the third through eighth grade with a mission to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Girls on the Run Serving Greater Kansas City serves more than 4,000 girls throughout fifteen counties in the greater Kansas City area each year. The 10-week program is led by specially-trained coaches and takes the girls through lessons such as banning negative self-talk, the dangers of gossip, healthy eating habits, and a community service project, to name a few. Running is woven into each lesson to inspire a life-long appreciation for physical fitness and to build healthy habits that will last a lifetime. The season concludes with the Girls on the Run 5k, a non-competitive celebration of the girls’ achievements with their family, friends and coaches.

There are many ways to get involved with Girls on the Run. At the heart of the organization are amazing volunteers whose commitment and passion impact the lives of thousands of girls each year. Coaching is the best way to experience the power of the program by being a role model to a team of girls. Coaches are trained on the Girls on the Run curriculum and supplied with all the materials they’ll need throughout the season. Coaching requires a time of commitment of twice a week 90 minute practices for the ten week season. One time volunteer opportunities are available twice a year at the season-ending 5k. More than 100 volunteers are needed to make the event safe and fun for the girls and their families.

Annually, Girls on the Run awards scholarships to more than 45% of our participants. The organization’s mission is to never turn a girl away from the life-changing program because her family cannot pay the registration fee. Scholarships are given to individual girls as needed, as well as to entire teams at schools where the free/reduced lunch rate is 50% or greater. In 2016 Girls on the Run will award a record $200,000 in scholarships. You can contribute to the Girls on the Run Kansas City Scholarship Fund by becoming a SoleMate. SoleMates are both men and women who enjoy pursuing individual goals, such as running a half marathon, full marathon, or a triathlon, while raising money for Girls on the Run of Greater Kansas City. All funds raised go to helping girls in the Greater Kansas City area. Free race entries to Rock The Parkway and the Kansas City Marathon are available for Girls on the Run SoleMates.

This year you can support Girls on the Run Serving Greater Kansas City by attending the first ever Live Luncheon. The Girls on the Run Live Fearlessly Luncheon will feature special guest speaker Kathrine Switzer who, in 1967, became the first woman to enter and run the Boston Marathon. Kathrine is a champion for sports equality for women and a role model to young girls in Kansas City and across the world. The event will be a fundraiser for the Girls on the Run Kansas City Scholarship Fund.
